Michael (Mike) J. Hatley, 69, of Colfax, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Lewiston, ID.

Michael was born May 4, 1944 in Walla Walla, WA to Edwin & Harriet Hatley. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Colfax. He enjoyed playing football while in Colfax High School, and was active in 4H and FFA where he learned and enjoyed raising pigs. Michael graduated from Colfax High in 1962. Michael continually helped build the family farm with his father. He married Sally Jo Olson and they made their home on their Wawawai Road acreage where they raised two daughters together until they later divorced.

Michael worked for the City of Pullman and Whitman County. He decided to return to college and graduated from Washington State University in 1983 with a BS in Construction Management. He worked in Alaska for 8 years, Hawaii for 2 and throughout the United States in disaster relief for FEMA until his retirement in 2010.

Following retirement, Michael returned to the family farm. His interests and hobbies were many and included his collection of caterpillar and lawn tractors, and rekindled his interest in raising pigs. He also enjoyed working during harvest for the Gilchrist family. Michael loved good conversation and spending time with family and friends. He cherished his family heritage and spent many hours taking care of the Hatley Family Cemetery. He was a caring and loving son, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend who would do anything for anyone. The old farm house was special to him and he enjoyed remodeling it through the years.

He is survived by his daughters Dawn (Rustie) Irby of Coeur d’Alene, ID; Stacy (Tadd) Davis of Rathdrum, ID; his brother Ron Hatley of Colfax, WA; his sister Sherry (Lyle) Brouse of Colfax, WA; two nephews, Jude Hatley and Tom Hatley of Australia; two nieces, Lynette Mazzola, Coeur d’Alene, ID; and Marla Withers, Yakima, WA; six grandchildren: Jesse, James, Kyle, Austin, Russell and Samuel, and four great grandchildren: Kyleigh, Ayden, Hunter and Ridge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his baby boy Hatley.

The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Simpson United Methodist Church, 325 NE Maple St., Pullman, WA. Viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to service for friends and family. A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Burial will be held at the Hatley Family Cemetery on May 4 in celebration of his life on his 70th Birthday. Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman, WA is caring for the family.
