MATTAWA - Oscar Onofre, Alan Caro, Dario Prudente and Tyus Squeochs scored in double figures to lead Wahluke to a 57-46 South Central A Conference East prep basketball win last week.

The rest of the week did not go as well, with league-leading Kiona-Benton trouncing the Warriors, 64-36, and River View edging them, 45-42.

Onofre led the way against Warden with 15 points. Caro had 14, Prudente 12 and Squeochs 10. Onofre added eight assists and six rebounds, and Caro had eight rebounds.

"Other than a nice run by Warden in the second quarter, we had a really nice game," coach Cody Marlow said.

Traveling to Ki-Be on Saturday still in position to make it to district, Wahluke was looking for an upset. However, Ki-Be was ready and stung the Warriors immediately.

"Unfortunately, with Ki-Be's first league loss coming earlier in the week to River View, they were a very focused and determined team," Marlow said. "We struggled all night containing their two big men and the best player in the league."

Foul trouble haunted the Warriors when their tallest player, the 6-1 junior Prudente, got his third foul early in the second period and had to sit. Onofre led the attack with 15 points.

It was an exciting night in the Warrior gym on Saturday, with senior parent night a halftime dance show and full house. The game between district contenders was exciting too.

"We match up well with River View and, losing by only two at their place on a controversial ending, we felt good about this game," Marlow said. "We played a great defensive game. Unfortunately, we weren't able to make our shots."

This game was decided at the foul line. The Warriors missed. The Panthers did not.

"We made a nice push in the fourth quarter but came up short," Marlow said.

Onofre had another good game, scoring 13 points. Squeochs had nine and Caro eight. Prudente was held to one.

This was Jason Yorgesen's last home game. He was the only senior who played all four years.

"He is a great kid with a great attitude and work ethic and pushes his teammates to be the best they can." Marlow said.

Jose Cesar Sanchez was also recognized. This was his second year. Manager Miguel Molina was recognized, and he will also be graduating this June.

Wahluke's final game of the season will be at Connell on Thursday.
