MOSES LAKE - Zidane Cantrell and Jeramy Jones were good goalkeepers, and when Jeramy kicks a soccer ball he kicks it with a loud shout. Dorieann Millings can shoot, and she was the nicest person in the whole soccer clinic.
Her brother Ruari was the fastest on the field and a good ball handler. And Dean Murray could really kick that ball. The children were participants in a soccer clinic for the handicapped, and showed what they learned at halftime of a benefit game at Lions Field Saturday afternoon.
The game was the brainchild of Moses Lake senior London Cleverly. The money raised will be donated to Special Olympics, which will donate money to the Moses Lake Special Olympics.
The game and clinic were Cleverly's senior project. Her aunt Michele Redford was born with Down syndrome, and Michele's experiences, and knowing other handicapped people through her church, gave her the idea for the clinic.
It was designed to give handicapped people the chance to do something that isn't part of their normal routine, Cleverly said, and show the soccer game audience that handicapped youths and adults have skills they might not have a chance to show otherwise.
The soccer game featured a boys versus girls format, with some of the guys from the Chiefs football team and their friends going against some of the girls soccer players and their friends. The teams met at high noon on a bright sunny day at Lions Field.
The boys had a 1-0 lead about halfway through the first half, thanks to the play of Mr. Orange Shoes, as Hill described him, also known as Johnny Martinez. Martinez' second goal was a breakaway that had him out in front of the pursuing pack by a good 15 yards. The girls got back with a goal after halftime, when a foul was called and they got a penalty kick, or, as Hill described it, "a 15 yard kicky kick." The final score was not available at press time.
The clinic drew eight participants, said Cleverly's mom Kim. Ashley Deringer and Ricky Ramos couldn't make the exhibition.
