SPOKANE - The Lady Cougars are making believers out of their competition as Warden wrestlers turned in another strong performance on the mats.
The Cougars won the 1A SCAC league championship and proved to be the team to beat in the postseason as they dominated the district tournament at East Valley High School in Spokane over the weekend finishing with 311.5 team points. Othello from the 2A Central Washington Athletic Conference was seventh with 196 points, and Quincy, 1A Caribou Trail League, eighth with 154.
"I am extremely proud of these girls," coach Valerie Hernandez said. "They have worked hard the whole season and continue to show their hard work and determination."
Warden had the upper hand for the entire tournament, placing 11 wrestlers in the final round. Five girls were crowned district champion and six finished runner-up. The Cougars had three wrestlers place third, and one place fourth.
"We competed with all divisions at district's and that is why this win is so significant," Hernandez said. "We have not lost a dual or tournament in the last two years."
The top four wrestlers in each weight class move on to the next level, which means Warden is sending 15 girls and one alternate to the Regional Tournament at Connell High School Saturday. Weigh in is at 8 a.m. The competition gets underway at 10.
