PREP BASKETBALL: Free-throw woes sink Viking boys in loss to visiting Bears

COEUR d'ALENE - Sophomore Ryan Walde had team highs of nine points and six rebounds for the Coeur d'Alene Vikings, who lost a nonleague boys basketball game to the Moscow Bears 44-41 on Wednesday night at Elmer Jordan Court.

Moscow (14-4) made 10 of 11 free throws in the game, including 5 of 6 in the fourth quarter. Coeur d'Alene was 6 of 15, including 2 of 5 in the fourth quarter.

"We missed a few lay-ins and some shots rattled out for us in the four quarter," interim Coeur d'Alene High coach Darren Taylor said. "(Kyle) Snyder made two big free throws for Moscow with 13 seconds left and we came down and our tying 3 at the buzzer bounced off the rim."

Coeur d'Alene (11-8) travels to Sandpoint on Saturday.

RATHDRUM - Jessica Norlander scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half for the Tigers, who lost to the Wildcats in a 3A District 1 tournament game at Lakeland High.

"I thought Kellogg just outplayed us, pretty much for all four quarters," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "They were on the attack and we were a little hesitant tonight. Taylor (Sheppard) played really aggressive and was really a difference maker."

Sheppard finished with 16 points for Kellogg (10-9), which faces Priest River tonight at 7 at Timberlake High in the second-place game, with that winner facing Kimberly in a state play-in game on Saturday at McCall-Donnelly High.

Savannah Woods scored 12 points to lead Bonners Ferry (16-5) past Priest River (14-8) 45-42 in the championship game later on Wednesday.

"We got an early lead and just stayed ahead of them," Kellogg coach Eli Bourgard said. "Timberlake played good defense and Norlander had a great game. We just executed well down the stretch."

Timberlake, which had played in the previous two state championship games, finishes 4-17.

TROY - Lexi Turkenburg scored 17 points for the Panthers, who fell to the Bulldogs in the 2A District 1-2 tournament championship game at Troy High.

Jackie Jensen had 10 rebounds and six points for Coeur d'Alene Charter (16-5), which faces St. Maries tonight in the second-place game at 6:30 at Kootenai High in Harrison Flats.

"Jackie played well tonight, but we just ran out of gas," Coeur d'Alene coach Doug Grant said. "I'm really proud of the girls. That's a great team we played and we can be proud of what we did tonight, even though it's a loss."

Tonight's winner will advance to a state 2A play-in game on Saturday at Grangeville High.

Grangeville (17-4) will face Valley (14-9) in the opening game of the state tournament next Thursday at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.

PULLMAN - Shannon Kempton and Jaicie Purvis scored 15 points each to lead the Lions past the Eagles in a Mountain Christian League game late Monday.

Kempton also snared 21 rebounds for Christian Center (12-4), which competes in the Mountain Christian League Tournament today through Saturday at the HUB in Liberty Lake.
