COEUR d'ALENE - Kootenai won just two games during the regular season, but picked the right time to get hot.

The third-seeded Warriors swept through the 1A Division II District 1 tournament, beating the top-seeded Clark Fork Wampus Cats 34-23 in the championship game Thursday night at Lake City High.

"What we did so well tonight was defense; we came out with intensity on defense," Kootenai coach Mike LaFountaine said. "We talked about defense all year long; they bought into our philosophy. It's just neat to see the way these kids bought in as a team."

Kootenai (4-18), which ousted No. 2 Mullan in the semifinals on Monday, will face Dietrich (23-1) in its state tourney opener next Thursday at 12:15 p.m. PST at Nampa High. It's the Warriors' first trip to state since 2008.

Leading 25-23 with less than two minutes to go, Kootenai closed with a 9-0 run to pull away. Savanna Dutton scored on a putback with 1:06 left, Katey Mae McInturff hit two free throws, then scored on a breakaway layup with 10 seconds left to clinch it.

Tess Vogel led Clark Fork (8-13) with nine points.
