Royal boys take 3 titles

WARDEN - Royal won three titles and advanced eight boys to regionals, and Wahluke had two titles and six placers at the South Central A Conference East District Wrestling Tournament here last Saturday.

The regional tournament will be held at Connell this Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. The top four finishers at each weight will advance to state at the Tacoma Dome the following weekend.

Royal also had a girl champion at district. Brea Diaz won the 118-pound crown. She beat a Sunnyside girl, 7-0, in the final. She will compete at Connell.

Host Warden won the boys tournament with 288 points. Royal finished fourth with 183 points, and Wahluke scored 153 points for fifth place.

Royal's district champs were Carlos Hernandez at 126 pounds, Emilio Bustos at 160 and Alex Myrick at 170.

Kiki Chabolla took fourth at 106, Steven Toro took fourth at 113, Trevor Mianecki won third at 145, Christian Guerrero was second at 182, and Hunter Follett garnered fourth at 195.

Hernandez won his title with a finals victory over Ramses Rodelo of Warden. Bustos pinned Harley Prescott of River View for his title. Myrick captured his crown with a pin of Victor Manzo of RV.

Royal just missed a fourth title at 182 when Guerrero lost, 7-1, too Cruz DelAngel of Kiona-Benton, ranked No. 1 in the state. Guerrero earlier lost the regular season match with DelAngel by pin.

"We're getting closer. We've got two more chances (regionals and state) to get him," coach Seth Weeks said.

In addition to the qualifiers, Royal will take three alternates to regionals, Juan Flores at 106, Eduardo Gonzalez at 132 and Matt Bartlett at 182.

Wahluke's champs were senior Antonio Gomez at 113 and freshman Adrian Toscano at 132.

Jack Yorgesen took third at 182, Eduardo Ortiz took third at 220, Irvin Oropeza finished fourth at 170, and Jaime Jimenez placed fourth at 220.

Gomez won his final with a decision over Jose Cervantes of Connell. Toscano took first with a decision over Raul Martinez of Warden. Yorgesen and Ortiz won third place with pins.

Wahluke will also take three boys to regionals who will compete for alternate positions. They are Vicente Neverez at 138, Jason Rey Cruz at 132 and Gustavo Quevado at 182.

Seven Wahluke girls placed at district and qualified for regionals. They are third place Fatima Romero at 124, Rebecca Barajas at 137, and Victoria Gaytan at 190 and fourth place Corina Tamayo at 118, Misty Jensen at 145, Maria Gutierrez at 190 and Jennifer Aznaran at 235.

The top three girls at each weight at regionals will advance to state. Warden took the girls district title. Wahluke finished fifth.
