Brandt Snedeker didn't have to take a back seat to anyone at Pebble Beach.

A runner-up to Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson the last two weeks, Snedeker finished off a command performance Sunday with a 7-under 65 for a two-shot victory over Chris Kirk in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, Calif. Snedeker tapped in for par on the 18th hole to finish at 19-under 267, setting the tournament record at Pebble Beach.

In five starts this year, Snedeker already has a win, two second-place finishes and a third. The win takes him to a career-best No. 4 in the world.

Kirk closed with a 64, though he never got closer than two shots. James Hahn, tied with Snedeker to start the final round, had a 70 and tied for third.

- Rocco Mediate birdied the 18th hole and finished with a 1-under par 71 to win the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.

He finished the tournament at 17-under 199 and became the 16th player to have a winning debut on the Champions Tour.

Mediate's 4-foot birdie putt came after Tom Pernice Jr. missed a 5-footer at No. 18 that could have forced a playoff.

Mediate started the day with a three-shot lead, lost it by the 14th hole, but regained it when Pernice bogeyed the par-4 17th from a greenside bunker. Mediate protected that lead with a birdie on the par-5 closing hole.

Baseball

Former World Series MVP David Freese will earn $3.15 million under his one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, nearly six times the $518,000 he made last year.

A St. Louis County native, Freese hit .283 with 20 home runs and 79 RBIs last season and earned his first All-Star appearance. He was eligible for arbitration for the first time.

NHL

Red Wings 3, Kings 2: Jonathan Ericsson scored with 5 seconds left to lift host Detroit past Los Angeles.

The Kings failed to clear the puck, less than a minute after they tied the game, and Ericsson took advantage. His slap shot from above the right circle trickled through Jonathan Quick's pads.

Devils 3, Penguins 1: Ilya Kovalchuk and David Clarkson scored less than two minutes apart in the second period to lead New Jersey at Pittsburgh.

Blackhawks 3, Predators 0: Marcus Kruger and Jonathan Toews each scored 66 seconds apart in the second period to lead Chicago at Nashville.

Rangers 5, Lightning 1: Carl Hagelin had two goals and an assist, and Henrik Lundqvist made 19 saves and host New York beat Tampa Bay.

Bruins 3, Sabres 1: At Buffalo, N.Y., Patrice Bergeron scored the go-ahead goal on a third-period power play in leading hot-starting Boston past Buffalo.

Oilers 3, Blue Jackets 1: At Columbus, Ohio, Magnus Paajarvi scored a go-ahead short-handed goal with 3:10 remaining and Edmonton beat Columbus.

Tennis

Rafael Nadal lost to Horacio Zeballos in three sets in the VTR Open final in Vina Del Mar, Chile, settling for a runner-up finish in his first tournament after being sidelined for seventh months with a left knee injury.

Nadal was an overwhelming favorite, shooting for this 37th singles title on clay. But Zeballos won 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-4 for his first title on any surface, looking every bit the equal of the seven-time French Open champion.

- The United States was eliminated in the first round of the Fed Cup in Rimini, Italy, losing to Italy 3-2 when Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci defeated Varvara Lepchenko and Liezel Huber in the decisive doubles match.

Skiing

Marion Rolland charged down the icy and bumpy 1.9-mile Streicher course in 1 minute, 50.00 seconds to win her first World Cup downhill event in Schladming, Austria.

- Christoph Bieler won the Nordic combined World Cup individual event in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Bieler completed the 10-kilometer cross-country race on a winding course in 25:31 minutes, edging out Japan's powerful skier Akito Watabe by 4.4 seconds, whittled down from a 52-second deficit.
