Warden girls top cats

CONNELL - The Warden girls wrestling team continues to roll as the Lady Cougars turned back all comers to claim the 1A Region 4 championship held at Connell High School Saturday.
Warden compiled a team total of 171 points, which nearly doubled second place finisher Othello as the Huskies tallied 93. Sunnyside (59) took third, Pasco and Grandview tied for fourth with 56 points each, and Quincy placed fifth with 43.
"I am really pleased with the way the girls are wrestling," coach Valerie Hernandez said. "Our seniors have shown great leadership in keeping the girls focused and setting examples as to what it will take to reach our goals."
Warden is taking 10 wrestlers to the Mat Classic State Tournament this weekend in Tacoma.
Representing the Cougars are regional champions Miexy Gonzalez (130), Bianca Hernandez (145), and Andrea Contrera (235), second place finishers Deienera Caudle (106), Brenda Deleon (118), and Alexys Jolley (137), third place qualifiers Melissa Vasquez (106), Anneissa Gonzalez (155), and Domineke Seal (190), and fourth-place finisher Ashley Martinez (145) who will be the lone alternate for Warden.
Coach Hernandez was named 2013 Regional coach of the Year. She has been at the helm of the girls wrestling program for the past six years.
Boys
The Cougar boys racked up 155 points to place third at the Region 3 tournament in Connell Saturday. Granger took top honors with 216, Zillah was second with 208.5 and Royal fifth, with 91.5 points.
Warden will be sending eight wrestlers to the Mat Classic this weekend. The boys making the trip are Regional champion Adam Hansen (220), third place finishers Miguel Canales (106), Ramses Rodelo (126), Emilio Pruneda (145), and Israel Valencia (220). Jesus Dominguez (106), Tyson Yamane (120), Raul Martinez (132), and Joseph Pruneda (285) who placed fourth will also be making the trip. Serving as alternates are Josiah Guerra and Saul Hinojosa.
