EPHRATA - Grant County prosecutors recently charged Moses Lake resident Irene M. Ramirez, 39, with theft and criminal impersonation.

Ramirez allegedly stole $700 from a victim, according to court records. Ramirez then reportedly contacted the victim's father and claimed to be with the state Department of Social and Health Services and the Department of Corrections before asking him to give her an additional $850.

According to court documents, Ramirez drove the victim to get a money order to pay for rent and electricity on Feb. 1. Ramirez reportedly took the victim to an ATM, where the victim used her Social Security card to withdraw $700.

The victim told police Ramirez grabbed the $700 and her Social Security card, according to court records. Ramirez allegedly told the victim she would put the card in a safe place and take her to get the money order after she took care of some personal business.

Ramirez reportedly dropped the victim off at home and told her she would be back later, according to court documents. The victim told police that was the last time she saw Ramirez.

The victim told police she reported the theft to the Social Security office and was told a new card would be sent to her father's residence, according to court records.

Ramirez reportedly contacted the victim's father on Feb. 4, claiming to be "Cassandra" with DSHS. According to court documents, Ramirez told the victim's father she could help with his daughter's case but she would need $850 to cover expenses.

Ramirez also reportedly told him she needed the victim's new Social Security card.

The victim's father gave Ramirez $850 but told her the new card was still in the mail, according to documents.

On Feb. 5, the victim's father contacted police after he received calls from both "Cassandra" and "Amanda" from DOC. He reportedly told police he just wanted to make sure they were who they claimed to be, according to court records.

While on the phone with police, the victim's father said "Cassandra" had arrived to pick up his daughter's mail, which included the new Social Security card. He reportedly hung up, according to records.

Police then discovered that while there was an "Amanda" at DOC, she did not contact the victim's father. When police told the victim's father, he reportedly told them he believed he had been scammed, according to court documents.

Police later located Ramirez in the parking lot of the U.S. Bank in Ephrata, according to court records. The victim's father identified Ramirez as the person who picked up his daughter's mail earlier that day.

Ramirez reportedly denied impersonating DSHS and D.O.C. personnel. She was transported to Grant County Jail, according to court records.
