• The following area students were recognized at Montana Tech in Butte for the fall semester 2012. Chancellor’s Honor Roll, 4.0 GPA, Kelsey DeWit, Columbia Falls, and Brandon Hackman, West Glacier; Dean’s List, 3.5 GPA, Cody Burghduff, Kelsey DeWit and Nicholas Riley, Columbia Falls, and Brandon Hackman, West Glacier; Honor Roll, 3.25 GPA, Cody Burghduff, Kelsey DeWit and Nicholas Riley, Columbia Falls, and Brandon Hackman, West Glacier.
• Suzanne Johnston, of Columbia Falls, was named to the spring President’s Honor Roll at the University of Great Falls in Great Falls for students with a 4.0 grade point average.
• Kylie Rocker, of Columbia Falls, was named to the spring semester Dean’s List at the University of Great Falls in Great Falls for students with a 3.5 or higher grade point average.
Writing contest
The Authors of the Flathead is sponsoring the 2013 High School Student Writing Contest for students in grades 9-12. Students can win $300, $200 and $100 for short stories and $125, $75 and $50 for poems. Mail works to 2013 Student Writing Contest, Authors of the Flathead, P.O. Box 7711, Kalispell MT 59904-0711. Canyon bike trail meeting May 16

Bill requires verification before issuing driver's licenses
A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.
Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.
Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
