From two recent brazen heists, a thief made off with a total of $5,400 worth of cardboard from the Hayden Walmart.

Most recently, on Monday this week, surveillance video at 9:20 p.m. captured a semi rig with a flatbed trailer parked by stacks of cardboard at the rear of the Walmart store at 550 W. Honeysuckle Ave.

The video showed a man use a forklift to load 22 bales of cardboard and then drive away at 10:15 p.m., a Kootenai County Sheriff's Department incident report said.

Store officials told sheriff's deputies they checked with a business that collects the store's cardboard, but a pickup hadn't been made.

Each of the 22 bales is reportedly worth $150, for a total loss of $3,300.

About two weeks earlier, on Jan. 27, the same semi truck had parked behind the store and the same man had exited the truck and loaded 14 bales of cardboard using a forklift. This loss was estimated at $2,100.

Lt. Stu Miller, of the sheriff's department, said there have been no other cardboard thefts reported in the area.

A representative at Bluebird Recycling, located at 4885 Industrial Way, said they aren't paying for cardboard right now because the value is way down. However, people can drop it off for recycling, she said.
