Moses Lake sewer project to be completed this year

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake City Council is accepting bids for the final phase of the sewer lining project. The annual project started in 1999 and the completion this year is a major accomplishment for the city.
"This is 15 years worth of projects," City Manager Joseph Gavinski said. "We're probably one of the few cities in the country to claim this accomplishment."
The 2013 project includes lining 25,000 feet of sanitary sewer pipe and almost 1,600 feet of storm sewer pipe throughout the city.
The estimated cost for the project is set at $765,000, according to Municipal Services Director Gary Harer.
The city began lining the 50 miles of concrete sewer mains in 1980 and has had an annual project since 1999. Harer said PVC pipes are being used for sewer pipes and are designed to last a significant amount of time.
The completion of the sewer line project will reduce the need for future repairs and backups of the sewer system.
Harer said there will remain about a mile of sewer line that is not replaced at this time because the current structure does not allow for line replacement.
"Eventually we will put manholes where those clean-outs are and line them at that time," Harer said.
The city will also work to repair sanitary and storm sewer mains at 12 locations across the city as part of a separate project.
The city is looking for bids for both projects.
