Thinking about making a run for city office in Kalispell?

Preparing for a municipal election in November, Kalispell has posted related information on its website to help potential candidates.

The election could usher in some new faces with five of the nine seats on the Kalispell City Council up for grabs.

Council seats open for election this fall include the mayor seat held by Tammi Fisher, a ward one seat held by Robert Hafferman, a ward two seat held by Jeff Zauner, a ward three seat held by Jim Atkinson and a ward four seat held by Tim Kluesner.

Kalispell Municipal Court Judge Lori Adams also is up for election after a recent appointment to that position.

Filing opens at the Flathead County Election Department at 8 a.m. on April 29. It closes at 5 p.m. on June 27.

A primary election would be held on Sept. 10 if deemed necessary, followed by the general election on Nov. 5.

Kalispell Mayor Tammi Fisher already has announced she will not run for a second term.

With a city manager form of government, Kalispell’s mayor serves as the ninth voting member and the president of the City Council.

Candidates for mayor must be at least 21 years old, a resident of Montana for at least three years and a resident of the city for at least two years prior to the election. The position is paid a salary of $9,000 a year plus an $1,800 annual stipend.

Candidates for City Council must be a resident of their ward for at least 60 days prior to the election. Ward seats are paid a salary of $5,000 a year plus a $900 annual stipend.

KALISPELL VOTERS also will be asked to weigh in this fall on a citizen-driven referendum regarding the Kalispell City Airport.

The referendum challenges Kalispell City Council’s 5-4 decision to upgrade the general aviation airport using Airport Improvement Program money from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Voters will be asked to either affirm or reject that council resolution.
