A 29-year-old transient Kalispell man pleaded not guilty Feb. 14 in Flathead District Court to a pair of felony charges.
Shane Roe is charged with assault with a weapon and criminal possession of dangerous drugs after allegedly cutting a former acquaintance and running from police.
According to a court document, a Kalispell police officer responded to Kalispell Regional Medical Center after receiving a report of a woman who was bleeding profusely and whose hands were covered in blood after her finger had been cut to the bone.
The officer located the victim’s vehicle and noticed a young man standing nearby who appeared to be watching him inspect the vehicle. When the officer started walking toward the man, later identified as Roe, he turned and ran.
After a brief foot pursuit and an extensive search of the area, officers arrested Roe. Roe’s T-shirt was reportedly covered in blood when he was apprehended and a black knife was found in one of his pockets. He allegedly said he “should have thrown it.”
The victim later told a Flathead County deputy that she had met up with Roe and they eventually got into an argument in her vehicle while it was parked at a house in Evergreen. She said Roe began hitting her in the face and demanding her keys before pulling out a knife and cutting her hand.
The court document states Roe initially refused to let the victim drive to the hospital, but she was able to convince him to change his mind.
A search of Roe’s possessions at the Flathead County Detention Center allegedly uncovered $370 in cash in a tin and not in Roe’s wallet, as well as a “spoon-like device” used to dole out drugs, two small vials with residue, and several small baggies containing believed methamphetamine residue.
The victim also told police Roe told her he was using illegal drugs.
Further notes on the court document allege officers had to give Roe multiple commands at gunpoint before he stopped approaching them and got on the ground. The notes also state Roe became increasingly agitated, repeatedly beating his head against the window of the patrol car.
Roe is also facing a felony charge of issuing a bad check. He was convicted in 2008 of felony theft and an amended charge of felony criminal endangerment, reduced from felony assault with a weapon, for which he was given a four-year sentence.
If convicted of his charges in both new cases, Roe faces up to 35 years in prison and a fine of up to $150,000. His next hearing is scheduled for June 12.
