SALT LAKE CITY - Katie Richens scored 5 of her game-high 20 points during a 10-2 run late in the second half as the 20th-ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins upset the top-ranked North Idaho College Cardinals 55-49 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Bruin Arena on Thursday night.
Natalie Parsons scored 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the 3-point line for Salt Lake.
"We didn't play very well," NIC coach Chris Carlson said. "It's a hard loss in that respect. (Parsons) is one of those kids that you've got to be up on and we knew that going into the game."
Rachel Morris, a 6-foot-4 transfer from Utah, started the decisive run for Salt Lake (10-5, 1-1 SWAC) with a layup with 5:17 remaining to give the Bruins the lead for good at 41-40.
Katie Buskey and Kabri Emerson scored 11 points each for NIC (17-1, 2-1), which travels to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, on Saturday. Snow (7-9, 1-1) lost to visiting Southern Idaho (8-9, 2-1) 40-39 on Thursday.
NIC shot 2 of 17 from the 3-point line, compared to 5 of 17 by Salt Lake and was outrebounded 50-38. NIC held Salt Lake scoreless for a six-minute stretch in the first half to take a 27-15 lead — the Cardinals’ biggest of the game.
“We just couldn’t get any of those (3s) to go down,” Carlson said. “There’s a lot of things we could have done better. I thought we had plenty of looks to win the game, but just didn’t shoot the rock tonight. We were just a bit out of rhythm. This was the first time we’d been outrebounded all season, but it’s time to get ready for the next game.”

SALT LAKE CITY — Skyler Halford’s free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining lifted the 20th-ranked Bruins past the 13th-ranked Cardinals in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game at Bruin Arena.
NIC led by 10 in the second half, but 3-pointers by Halford and Gary Payton II — son of the former Sonics great — helped Salt Lake cut the deficit to 72-71 with 2:16 remaining.
Jalil Abdul-Bassit hit two free throws with 7 seconds left to put NIC (15-3, 2-1) ahead 74-73, but Halford drove the length of the court and was fouled on the shot near the basket.
“They really just hit some shots down the stretch,” NIC coach Jared Phay said. “To their credit, they just hit some shots. We need to be able to close games out. I thought our effort was good tonight, but we need to bounce back and get ready for Snow on Saturday.”
In other SWAC play on Thursday, Snow (13-3, 1-1) defeated Southern Idaho (13-4, 1-2) 79-64 in Ephraim, Utah.
Chris Sarbaugh had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists for NIC, which travels to Snow on Saturday.
Halford scored a game-high 25 points for Salt Lake (14-2, 2-0), which hosts Southern Idaho on Saturday.
