This week, I have 8 Power Plate questions for Kelly White. Kelly is a Certified Power Plate Trainer, Certified Personal Trainer and Weight Loss Management Professional at 360 Fitness in Coeur d'Alene. Kelly also specializes in strength training, cardiovascular endurance, and proper nutrition.
For more information, here is a link to Kelly's site http://www.betterbodybykelly.com. Kelly actively competes in figure competitions and at age 50, placed fourth in her category at the Empire Classic last year.
Q. Kelly, let's start with the most obvious question. What is the Power Plate?
A. A Power Plate machine uses the principles of acceleration training to stimulate the body's natural response to vibration. It's a total body workout and wellness tool. It helps with circulation, balance, strength building, weight loss, bone density, cardiovascular, stretching and even massage, all in as little as 15 minutes a day.
Q. The Power Plate vibrates and moves in multiple directions. How does this create an intense workout?
A. The vibrations send waves of energy throughout the body, making your muscles contract between 25 and 50 times per second. A typical traditional workout is about 20 contractions.
Q. How often should a person use the Power Plate to see results?
A. Since the vibration stimulates more muscle fibers, you don't want to overtrain. I recommend using it for about 15-30 minutes at a time. However, it can be used every day.
Q. Are there any risks with using the Power Plate in regards to injury?
A. Just like any other piece of exercise equipment, if not used properly there is always a possibility. You need to use the correct settings for your body, plus form is extremely important.
Q. Is the Power Plate easy-to-use and appropriate for all fitness levels?
A. The Power Plate is a great tool for all ages, lifestyles and fitness levels. It is easy to use. With a few sessions from a Certified Power Plate Trainer you will understand the correct way to use it and best way to benefit from it.
Q. From a training point, which athletes would benefit the most from Power Plate? Examples like runners, cyclist, swimmers, bodybuilders, etc?
A. It is great for any and all athletes. Even professional baseball and football teams utilize it to help build strength, increase endurance and as a warm up for range of motion.
Q. Do you get any upper body benefit from using the Power Plate?
A. Yes, there are a multiple of exercises that can be performed for upper as well as lower. You will get a full body workout when using the Power Plate.
Q. There are not many Power Plates in local gyms and fitness centers. Do you see that changing in the future?
A. That's a tough question. The Power Plate is a very expensive piece of equipment. I don't know that many gyms could support the purchase. However, that being said, it would be great to see more locally at the athletic sports level.
Thanks Kelly for your great answers!

Bad weather running
Last week I was reading an article in this newspaper that stated we have not seen very many single digit temperatures in the last few years and we have not had subzero temperatures at all in a few years. Global warming aside, here we are looking at a very cold winter ahead and an arctic express on top of us as of today.
Is high intensity cardio bad?
Over the last 10 years, we have seen an explosion in the popularity of high intensity cardio workouts. Millions of people have incorporated everything from basic aerobics to Insanity classes and the once very popular Zumba regimen. Every year, newer and tougher high impact cardio programs tend to make the top fitness trends.

There are a few things to consider before you take your first, second or 10th attempt at a fitness regimen. The best programs that can truly deliver excellent benefits to your health often require the least overall impact to your time and body.
