The Glacier girls took an advantage early and kept Lake City (Coeur d’Alene) at bay, beating the Wolves 52-42 in a nonconference basketball game Saturday at Glacier High School.

The Wolfpack led the entire game but was never able to pull away, with Lake City consistently cutting into Glacier’s big leads. Glacier led by double-digits six times, but was never able to expand its lead to more than 11 points.

“I kept thinking we were going to bury them,” Glacier coach Kris Salonen said.

“(Lake City) has a great shooting team. They were always able to work back in it.”

Glacier opened the game on fire, missing only a pair of shots in the first five minutes. The Pack led 14-3 with more than 3 minutes to play in first quarter, but as was the story all game, went cold for the rest of the period, letting Lake City back in the game.

After the lead dwindled back down to four, the Pack went on a 7-0 run, only to again fall silent for the final three minutes of the period, entering the break leading 27-22. The lead fell back to five in the third before a Glacier run and four in the fourth. The Wolfpack closed the game on a 12-6 run to win by 10.

The Glacier defense frustrated Lake City, keeping it from attempting a shot within 15 feet of the basket for the entire first period. The Wolves weren’t able to find their offense consistently thanks to 12 Glacier steals, never scoring more than six points in a row.

“The girls played great half-court defense,” Salonen said.

Glacier junior Cassi Hashley had a huge game, scoring 16 points and pulling in 15 rebounds with six steals.

Hailee Bennett scored 10 points and had four assists.

“It was a great game for us,” Salonen said.

“We had more assists than turnovers. I think that’s the first time that’s happened. We took care of the ball and shared the ball. It was a great team game.”

The Wolfpack (4-2) will host Libby (1-8) on Tuesday in its last nonconference home game of the season.
