PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Weary Bulldogs come up short vs. Bears

SANDPOINT - Weary legs from the previous night's emotional Moose Madness spirit game win over Bonners Ferry were evident right from the start for Sandpoint, which was outscored 13-3 in the first quarter en route to a 55-45 loss to Moscow on Saturday in a pivotal 4A Inland Empire League matchup Saturday at Les Rogers Court.

Freshman Madi Shoening scored 17 points and Hailey Olin added 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (9-7, 1-1 4A IEL), who played even with the Bears after the sluggish first quarter but could never seem to close the gap.

"The heart was willing, but the legs couldn't carry us in another emotion-filled game," said Bulldogs coach Bill Bender, who noted the impact of the Moose Madness game was readily apparent. "We were a step slow on defense and unable to make the big shot on offense. The late charge from Hailey and Madi just couldn't stem the steady play of Moscow."

Jordan Speelmon dished out five assists and Cassie Young added six points and two blocks for the Bulldogs, who now have an uphill battle in the quest to host the Region 1 tournament, a decided advantage in the double-elimination format.

Chloe Quinett, the daughter of Brian Quinnett, a former NBA player with the Knicks and Mavericks, had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bears (5-8, 2-0 4A IEL). Joelle Stephens scored a game-high 18 points for Moscow.
