Surrounded by loved ones and in the comfort of hospice care, Evelyn Kathleen Stillman died at the home of her daughter on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013.

The daughter of George Daniel Peabody and Mary Velma Breakfield Peabody, she was born at 6 p.m. on Dec. 30, 1929, at Ceres, Calif.

A young World War II bride, she was married Sept. 30, 1942, in Juarez, Mexico, to Air Force Private Robert W. Deering. They made their home in Modesto, Calif., and had three children before divorcing in May 1952.

Evelyn was working as a carhop at Hindy’s Drive-In on Highway 99 in Modesto when she met long-haul trucker Robert A. Stillman of Spokane, Washington. They were married on Feb. 13, 1958, at the Hitching Post in Coeur d’Alene, and lived in Spokane, Kennewick, Coeur d’Alene and St. Maries before making their home on Seltice Way in Coeur d Alene. They divorced in 1984.

Although a third-generation Californian, Evelyn never regretted moving her young family to North Idaho. She loved picking huckleberries and catching perch and crappie. But even more, she loved baking pies and cookies for her children and grandchildren, and making her famous enchiladas, with lots of raisins, for family meals.

For many years, beginning in the mid-80s, she was a volunteer at the American Legion bingo games on Fourth Street, where she sold cards and called back winning games.

She is survived by her three children, Rita Hollingsworth of Post Falls, Lona Workman (and son-in-law Lewis Workman) of Spirit Lake, and Robert W. Stillman of Coeur d’Alene; five grandchildren, Melinda Cardwell and Kelly Hollingsworth of Coeur d’Alene, Margo Gore of Boise, and Shawn Workman and Robin Workman of Spirit Lake; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

Visitation will be ten a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. 4th Street, Coeur d’Alene Idaho , followed by a 1 p.m. burial service, officiated by the Rev. Daniel J. Perry, at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Cemetery.
