PREP ROUNDUP: Defense sparks Lakeland to big win over Sandpoint

RATHDRUM - Strong half-court defense fueled Lakeland to an 18-point halftime lead, and the Hawks went on to beat the visiting Sandpoint Bulldogs 66-38 in 4A Inland Empire League play Thursday night at Hawk Court.

"We had pretty good defensive pressure in the first quarter," Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. "We forced six turnovers, and scored on five of those to jump out on them. It was a really good defensive effort by the kids."

Tyrel Derrick scored 19 points and had four steals for Lakeland (7-7, 1-1 4A IEL). Scott Simpson added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Jeremiah Gagnon scored 12 points for Sandpoint (2-12, 0-2).

Lakeland returns to action next Friday at home against Lake City.

Curtis Cassano scored a game-high 16 points for the Coeur d'Alene JV.

RATHDRUM - Freshman Madi Schoening scored 25 points and the visiting Bulldogs inched away in the fourth quarter to beat the Hawks in 4A Inland Empire League play at Hawk Court.

"It was a tightly contested game," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "I thought our kids showed a lot of heart and showed a lot of improvement - I can't fault the effort of our kids. We did a great job cutting down on turnovers, we just had a hard time keeping Sandpoint off the free-throw line."

Sandpoint (11-7, 2-1 4A IEL) shot 22 of 42 from the line. Lakeland (3-14, 0-3) shot 12 of 15.

Josie Coder scored 17 points for Lakeland. Kelly Ramus had nine rebounds, Jordan Ward five steals.

"One of these days, one of these games, it's going to bounce our way in the fourth quarter," Seymour said.

Lakeland travels to Moscow on Saturday.

HARRISON FLATS - Ellison Schultz had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the first double-double of her prep career, and Kootenai snapped a 13-game losing streak with a nonleague victory over North Idaho Christian.

"Schultz played like she wanted to win tonight," said Kootenai coach Mike LaFountaine, noting the senior post scored 12 of the team's 15 points in the second quarter. "The girls got a lead and responded well. Now we can ride some momentum into the Battle on the Trail game with Lakeside."

Kootenai (2-14) hosts Lakeside on Saturday.

Kana Shanley and Brenna Murrison scored nine points apiece for North Idaho Christian (11-6), which plays Columbia River Christian on Saturday at Canfield Middle School.

SPIRIT LAKE - Timberlake's Drew Johnson (195 pounds), Ryan Starr (98), Kody Hongslo (126) and Tyler Badertscher (152) all won by pin for the Tigers in their Intermountain League loss to the Spartans in the War on the Waters spirit match at Timberlake High.

"Some guys wrestled well, some could have done a little more to save some points," Timberlake coach Ryan Montang said. "We had a lot of young guys in, so I knew it would be a challenge - but we still had a good shot at coming out on top."

Lane Stevens (160) added a 10-1 major decision win for Timberlake (6-4, 1-1 IML), which had four freshmen fill in for starters who were out for various reasons.

Montang said that he is sending part of his squad to wrestle today and Saturday at the Clearwater Classic in Lewiston. The others will wrestle Saturday at the George Wild tournament in Kellogg.

Priest River (3-4, 1-1) will compete at the George Wild tournament in Kellogg on Saturday.
