GREELEY, Colo. - Tate Unruh scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, helping Northern Colorado defeat Eastern Washington 72-56 on Saturday night.
Derrick Barden scored 15 points and Tim Huskisson scored 14 for Northern Colorado (5-11, 3-5 Big Sky).
Barden also grabbed 15 rebounds, helping Northern Colorado to a 47-29 advantage in that department.
Venky Jois had a big game for Eastern Washington (4-14, 2-6) with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 7 blocked shots.
Collin Chiverton added 13 points for Eastern Washington and Parker Kelly had 11.
"I'm proud of our guys and their effort," EWU coach Jim Hayford. "Northern Colorado is coming around - they are a good team. They paid these pains last year."
Northern Colorado had a 14-4 scoring advantage off turnovers and a 16-9 edge in second-chance points.
Senior Jeffrey Forbes added five points, including a 3-pointer that tied him with Justin Paola (1990-92) for third in school history with 164 career 3-pointers. Forbes has now played in 109 games to rank ninth in school history, and could break Marc Axton's (2002-05) school record of 119 games played later this season.
Already playing without starting senior point guard Kevin Winford (concussion), Forbes played only 20 minutes after suffering a finger injury in the second half that required stitches.
"He had his pinky finger almost ripped off, so he wasn't able to play down the stretch," said Hayford of Friday's accident in Grand Forks, N.D., involving the team van and another vehicle. "We'll get it all figured out."
Eastern Washington plays at Southern Utah next Saturday.
