What's your ROI?

You have been hearing it for months now. The fiscal cliff, your IRA simple money needs to be diversified and your paycheck is going to decrease by $200 in the next 30 days. Oh, thank goodness I have a good accountant and I am married to a German man who watches the market everyday and talks about the ROI on everything. So what's your ROI on your health for this year? Well, that will depend on what you decide to do today, this week, this month, this year for your health.

Your ROI is your "Return On Investment." The investment is your health. It is what we call the "biggest thing and the best thing" you ever get to be in charge of and take care of all by yourself. So the pressure is definitely on now. It is totally up to you and your choices. Should I exercise today or just lay here by the fire and read a good book? Should I plow through that bag of chips at the office because I am starving or just walk away and eat a good dinner at home in a half an hour. Oh, all these choices. Should I do my sit-ups today or just bag it because I am too tired and I hear the bed calling. It takes so many good decisions all day long, I wonder if we are up to it?

So what is the return? Well, the return is determined by your daily decisions that lead you to good outcomes or poor ones. I read a story recently about Miranda Lambert, who is an amazing country western singer who decided she wanted to have a bigger return on her investment when it came to her health. She and her trainer, who goes with her on the road (I wish I had one who went with me on my road too), decided to come up with a word that she would say anytime she thought she might fall off the wagon with her workout regime. The word they decided needed to be a big word, that would keep her on track. The word they came up with was "video." Of course, to you and me it means nothing, but to her, it meant everything. She chose "video" because this summer she wants to shoot her new song in a video with her looking good. So anytime she doesn't want to run the stairs at a venue or follow her diet regime, they just say "video." So what will your word be? What will I say so I can get the ROI I want in the next year to ten years of my life? Oh, so many choices. Let's pick a word, find a reason, lay down a plan, choose a life that looks like what we want right now, because I am sure you and I both need a good ROI in the world we live in.

All about pelvic health

Kegel mania started years ago. In fact most of the women I know have heard about Kegel exercises, even if they don't really understand them or know how to do them very well. Often women will say, "I think I'm doing it right, but I'm really not sure."

T'was the night before

When I was little I loved the magic of the poem “The Night Before Christmas.” My parents had a well-worn book that had beautiful illustrated pictures and they would read it to me each Christmas season. As soon as I could read it myself I would slowly read each page and get lost in my imagination. I would pretend that St. Nicholas was coming to my house in Maryland, landing on our roof with his reindeers and sneaking in my living room to deliver the “goods.” I would wait up as long as I could to try to get a peek of him. I wanted to know him. I wanted to watch him make his delivery. I wanted to see if he was really “jolly.” I wanted to believe. I wanted to believe in something bigger and better than anything I'd ever known.

Caregivers make the world a better place

Last week one of my incredible, long-term employees came to me and said, "I know what you need to write about next week. You need to write about all of our amazing patients that are caregivers. They need to know they are not alone and that we can help them, make this time of their lives better." I smiled and we proceeded to talk about the art of caregiving and the caregivers themselves.
