There's more anticipation for Spirit Lake's Winter Fun Festival this year than during the first two years. Having snow on the ground and a frozen lake are the reasons why.

The weather didn't fully cooperate during the first two years, limiting the events.

This year's festival will be on Sunday at the recreation center and the boat launch on Spirit Lake. Proceeds benefit the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

"We didn't hardly have any snow the first two years, so this will be nice," said Hilary Howard, park and recreation activities director.

Attendees can enter team competitions or participate in several free family-friendly activities.

The cost for four-person teams is $30. They'll compete in smooshing (team ski race), an igloo pull, tug-o-war and human bowling events. Teams can register on-site from noon to 1 p.m., at City Hall or online at www.slparks.org.

The competitions start at 1 p.m. There are no age or gender requirements for the teams.

Other events include ice skating, snow sculpting, a bonfire, sledding, a chili challenge and a carnival.

"There's fun activities for the whole family," Howard said. "We may even have lawn mower races on the lake if the weather permits."

Howard said ice skate donations are needed so they can be offered during such community events.

The event raised $800 last year.

Activities will run until dark. There will be food and hot chocolate for sale.

"Since there's no football (on TV) this weekend, there's no reason to stay inside," Howard said. "That's why we're holding the festival this weekend."

* Another fundraiser for the Parks and Recreation Department, the Winter Blast, will be held on Saturday at the Linger Longer Lounge in Spirit Lake. The event starts at 4 p.m. and live music by the Coyote Rose Band will run from 5 p.m. to midnight. Cover is $3.

There will be raffles, prizes and dancing.
