Three of the five youths who amassed a total of 60 charges for crimes committed in the Canyon are back in the court system.
In a span of a few hours on Friday, one teen pleaded guilty to stealing a van, another was arrested after vandalizing a business and a third was detained for allegedly violating her probation.
Daniel Trenk, 16, of Coram on Friday pleaded guilty to felony theft after stealing a van Nov. 22, 2012, on Ferndale Road. During his hearing, Trenk admitted that he had been drinking when he saw the van.
“I was walking around and the keys were in the van and I was drunk so I took the van,” Trenk said.
He then proceeded to pick up two girls, and the three of them drove around, drinking, before stopping to drink more. After hitting the road again, Trenk rolled the van near Bug Creek Road in Ferndale. He said that prior to the crash he had intended to return the van.
At the time, Trenk was already on probation for misdemeanor assault and criminal trespass to property for assaulting a boy on Feb. 12, 2012, in Martin City. A disposition hearing in the van theft case is set for March 1.
Also present during the Martin City assault and also part of the Canyon crew was Mathew Hauck, 15, Martin City.
Several hours after Trenk’s hearing on Friday, Hauck was arrested after he was caught writing on the bathroom walls of Canyon Foods in Hungry Horse, according to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry.
Hauck had been banned from the business.
In earlier cases, Hauck admitted to felony counts of theft and burglary as well as four misdemeanor counts of theft, two misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief, and misdemeanor counts of accountability to assault and criminal trespass to property.
He had been placed on probation at least until age 18.
After being apprehended Friday at the store, Hauck was incarcerated in the Flathead County Juvenile Detention Center on a preliminary charge of criminal mischief and for violating his probation.
Also incarcerated in the juvenile detention center is Skyla Komeotis, 16, Kalispell, who was picked up Friday by Kalispell police officers on Wolfpack Way less than an hour after Hauck was apprehended in Hungry Horse.
Komeotis was arrested on a warrant after allegedly violating her probation.
On Sept. 30, 2012, she had been placed on probation until at least age 18 after admitting to a felony charge of burglary as well as misdemeanor charges of partner or family member assault, accountability to theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct, obstructing a peace officer, privacy in communications and assault.
Komeotis had been involved in crimes with Hauck and his brother, James Smith, 13, of Hungry Horse, who has been sent to Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility after admitting to four felonies and seven misdemeanors.
