Carruth, Winterhawks blank Chiefs

SPOKANE - Mac Carruth had 36 saves for his Western Hockey League-leading fifth shutout of the season as the Portland Winterhawks snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-0 win against the Spokane Chiefs in front of 6,007 at the Spokane Arena on Friday night.

It is the first time Spokane has been shut out in 102 games.

Ty Rattie opened the scoring with his fourth goal in three games this week against Spokane and Nicolas Petan scored a power-play goal to give Portland a 2-0 lead after the first period.

After a scoreless second period, Brenden Leipsic added a power-play goal midway through the third to cap the scoring for Portland, which went 3 of 8 on the power play.

Spokane finished 0 for 7 on the power play, including 0 for 5 in the second period.

Spokane (30-17-2-0, 62 points) hosts Medicine Hat tonight at 7:05.
