COEUR d'ALENE - Now, they're even.
Just 23 days after being swept at Salt Lake Community College, the North Idaho College men's and women's basketball teams bounced back to sweep the Bruins in Scenic West Athletic Conference action at Rolly Williams Court on Saturday.
In the men's game, NIC (21-3, 8-1 SWAC), ranked 13th in this week's NJCAA poll, outscored the 11th-ranked Bruins (19-3, 7-1) 52-41 in the second half for an 87-78 win.
"I think we were too fired up to play the game," NIC men's coach Jared Phay said. "Offensively, we were too tense. We wanted to be quick, but not hurry, but were kind of rushing in the first half and had nine turnovers. We needed to be able to secure the ball better in the second half."
The loss snaps a 15-game win streak by the Salt Lake men, who now trail the SWAC-leading Cardinals by a half game.
Earlier, Angela Woods shot 5 of 7 from beyond the 3-point line, finishing with 16 points to lead the second-ranked Cardinal women (23-1, 8-1) past the Bruins (13-8, 4-4) 68-54.
“Ang hit some big shots for us today,” NIC women’s coach Chris Carlson said. “She’s done that from the beginning of the year and has been a strong shooter for us — especially late in games in transition and always seems to find a gap out there to get a shot off.”
NIC will host in-state rival Southern Idaho next Saturday, starting with the women’s game at 3 p.m., followed by the men’s at 5.
MEN: Trailing at halftime Phay, the former Post Falls Christian coach, turned to Hope to give the Cardinals a lift in the second half.
Mikey Hope, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Tacoma, Wash., scored 17 of the team’s first 29 second-half points. Jordan McCloud scored eight points in the first half to keep NIC close early on.
“I just zoned out and started rambling some points off,” Hope said. “After that first shot went down, I was just thinking, ‘man, I’ve got to keep going.’”
“It’s huge for both Mikey and Jordan McCloud,” Phay said. “We talked about their unselfishness in the locker room after the game. Mikey hadn’t played a lot of minutes lately and Jordan hadn’t played at all, but they both came in and did what they had to do and Mikey just sparked us offensively.”
Jalil Abdul-Bassit led NIC with 27 points — two days after scoring 28 in the Cardinals’ 82-77 overtime win against Snow. Keon Lewis had 21 points for NIC.
“We got the win we needed and we feel good about it now,” Phay said. “But we’re tied for first (in the loss column), and that’s not what we want. CSI’s playing good and maybe the most talented team in the conference and comes here next week. They’re very capable of coming in and beating us next week.”
Sai Tummala scored 20 points for Salt Lake, which returns home to face Colorado Northwestern on Thursday.
“It was a real good game,” Salt Lake coach Todd Phillips said. “Jared has a real good team. They’re long and athletic. North just shot the crud out of the ball in the second half and we didn’t defend them well enough. We defended well in the first half, but the second half, they made tough shots, easy shots and moved the ball well. The thing about North is that they rebound the ball the best in the conference and do a really good job of that.”
Skyler Halford, who scored 25 points in the previous game for Salt Lake, had 13 points and Tyrell Corbin — son of Utah Jazz coach Tyrone — added 10 points.
In other SWAC men’s games, Southern Idaho (16-7, 4-5) beat Snow (15-7, 3-5) 75-61 and Utah State-Eastern (12-10, 3-5) beat Colorado Northwestern (7-16, 0-8).

WOMEN: NIC, which lost 56-48 at Salt Lake earlier this month, forced 20 turnovers in the rematch and held the Bruins to 16-of-45 shooting from the field.
“We were really ready for them,” said Woods, a 5-9 sophomore guard. “We’d prepared all week for both them and Snow. It felt good to get them back a little bit and we definitely learned a lot from that loss.”
“You can’t lose track of her (Woods),” Salt Lake coach Betsy Specketer said. “When she gets rolling, her team seems to find her and pass the ball well. When she’s got that kind of an open look, she’s going to drain it. We knew that going in, but what hurt us was the dribble penetration. They find her, but you need to be able to find the ball on defense. When she gets that kind of look, she’s going to drain it.”
NIC jumped out to an early lead, but had two starters — Georgia Stirton and Katie Buskey — on the bench in foul trouble for a majority of the first half.
“We had to use everyone off the bench,” Carlson said. “We got Jansen Butler in there because (backup point guard) Tori (Davenport) had a little bit of a cold and Jansen did a great job. She’d barely played any point guard this year, but we started to build a lead and had a good stretch. Those things I was pleased with.”
NIC had lost two straight against Salt Lake, dating back to the Region 18 tournament semifinals last season.
“It’s just a huge win on the fact they’d beat us already this year and knocked us out of the tournament last year,” Carlson said. “I know our players wanted to get them and I know we played a good first half down there (on Jan. 3) and led by seven at halftime, but we let it slip away. We didn’t have the same energy that we’d had the last few days, but we had some players do what they needed to do.”
Katie Richens, who scored 20 points in the previous matchup for Salt Lake, was scoreless in five minutes on Saturday.
“She picked up two fouls early,” Specketer said. “I thought she looked a step slow and she was guarding someone (Stirton) that you can’t be a step slow against, so I felt we needed to go with someone else. I thought it would be a good experience for some of those kids we’re going to need down the stretch to get a taste of competition on this floor. It’s only going to help them later this year.”
In other SWAC women’s games, Southern Idaho (13-11, 7-2) beat Snow (8-14, 2-6) 66-54 in Twin Falls and Utah State-Eastern (6-14, 3-5) beat Colorado Northwestern (12-11, 1-7) in Ephraim, Utah.
