Book clubs meet for tales of travel and trail
Daily Inter-Lake | UPDATED 11 years, 11 months AGO
Whether your reading list favors history or fiction, there is a book club in Flathead County for you.
Local clubs have announced what’s on the agenda for their February meetings, and the list offers everything from travel to memoir genres:
The Flathead Library Book Club will discuss “A History of the World in 6 Glasses” by Tom Standage.
The book tells the story of humanity through the lens of six beverages: beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea and cola. For Standage, each drink is a kind of technology, a catalyst for advancing the culture.
The group meets at 5 p.m. Feb. 12 in the main library’s conference room in Kalispell. For more information, contact Marylane Pannell at 257-5793 or kuhlpan@cyberport.net.
The Montana History Book Club will discuss “A Ride to the Infernal Regions: Yellowstone’s First Tourists,” by Calvin C. Clawson.
The book tells a little-known and previously unavailable account of the first tourist party to Yellowstone National Park. In 1871, inspired by sketchy reports of Yellowstone’s wonders, six Montanans trekked to the park to see its geysers, lakes and cannons — and encountered the famous Hayden Expedition.
The club meets at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 14 in the basement conference room of the Museum at Central School in Kalispell.
Books may be available in the museum gift shop. For more information, call 756-8381.
Flathead Valley Community College Reading Group will discuss Geraldine Brooks’ “Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague.”
The novel follows the story of housemaid Anna Frith, who, along with her fellow villagers, confronts the spread of disease and superstition in 1666 after an infected bolt of cloth arrives from London. As Anna struggles to survive and grow, the year of catastrophe turns into a year of wonders.
The group meets at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 20. The only cost involved is the purchase of the book.
For more information or to sign up, call Sharon Randolph at 756-3981.
The Bad Rock Book Discussion Group will talk about “Drive Me Wild: A Western Odyssey,” by Christina Nealson.
The travel book tells the story of how Nealson moved into a 35-foot motor home with her husband, cat and dog and took the road — all over North America, from British Columbia to the tip of the Baja Peninsula.
The club is meeting a week later than usual in February; the meeting starts at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at Bad Rock Books, 615 Nucleus Ave., Columbia Falls. Treats are provided.
For more information, call Carol Rocks at 892-0515.
The Whitefish Library Book Discussion Group will talk about Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail” at its February meeting.
The memoir tells the story of Strayed’s 1,100-mile solo hike following the death of her mother. “Wild” captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against the odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened and ultimately healed her.
The group meets at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 in the library meeting room.
Books may be available for checkout. Everyone is welcome to take part in the meeting.
