A 40-year-old Kalispell man is in jail after he was arrested after a brief chase Thursday afternoon.

Todd Sean Franklin was booked into the Flathead County Detention Center after fleeing from law enforcement on U.S. 2 West, reaching speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

According to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry, the brief incident was a planned arrest by the Northwest Drug Task Force involving his deputies and Kalispell Police Department officers.

As Franklin drove east near Kalispell’s west side, a deputy performed a precision immobilization technique or “PIT maneuver,” using the front quarter panel of the cruiser to nudge the rear corner of the target vehicle, causing its driver to lose control and the vehicle to spin out.

The maneuver stopped Franklin’s truck and knocked off its topper, allowing law enforcement to apprehend him.

Curry said he could not share any further details.

“The U.S. attorney forbids me from discussing any drug case at all that could be federally prosecuted,” Curry said. “If I talk about it, they won’t take it.”

He said Franklin probably will be booked on a series of traffic offenses, since his more serious charges will be filed in U.S. District Court.
