A Kalispell man is facing a trio of charges after allegedly stealing an all-terrain vehicle and leading police on a short pursuit June 24.

Corey Brewton, 43, is charged with felony counts of theft and criminal endangerment as well as fleeing from or eluding a peace officer.

The brand-new Yamaha Kodiak ATV — valued at $2,500 — was reported stolen from a Whitefish Stage Road home at 3:30 p.m. June 24. Also stolen was a small trailer loaded with wood that was hooked to the ATV.

At 4:15 p.m., the Kalispell Police Department received a call from a motorist following the stolen ATV southbound on Third Avenue East.

Officers tried to pull the ATV over, and its driver, later identified as Brewton according to a court document, pulled into the Rosauers parking lot, made eye contact with an officer, then hit the gas and fled.

Detective Myron Wilson said Brewton then drove over the landscaping and jumped the curb into the parking lot of MacKenzie River Pizza, where he struck two vehicles, including one that contained a mother and her young son.

The court document alleges Brewton then drove onto the property of Sunburst Mental Health and onto a walkway in front of the exit doors.

“An officer then tried to cut him off, and he ran into the side of the patrol car,” Wilson said. “He fell off the four-wheeler and was arrested right there.”

The officers held Brewton at gunpoint while he was taken into custody. According to a dispatch log, Brewton suffered a possible hand injury in his collision with the police car. The collision also kept the officer from immediately returning to patrol until he could get access to another vehicle.

If convicted of all his charges, Brewton faces up to one year in the county jail and 20 years in prison as well as a fine of between $2,000 and $102,000. He is currently incarcerated in the Flathead County Detention Center, where his bond has been set at $40,000.
