COEUR d'ALENE - This Independence Day weekend, safety will be taken seriously.

All commissioned officers of the Idaho State Police, even those usually behind a desk, will be hitting the road in preparation for one of the busiest travel days of the summer.

"We want to make sure everybody is able to celebrate our nation's independence safely, and so all commissioned officers scheduled to work on July 3rd, even myself, will be out patrolling our state and federal highways," ISP Colonel Ralph Powell said.

All District 1 staff in the Coeur d'Alene ISP headquarters are participating as well.

The goal of the enhanced patrols is not to only enforce the traffic laws, but also to remind the public of the following:

* Don't drink and drive

* Wear seat belts

* Be patient with other drivers and give yourself extra time to travel

* Stay alert and get enough sleep before traveling

* Avoid distractions, including cell phones

* Move over when passing emergency vehicles

"We want to give our citizens added safety on the roads to start out the Fourth of July holiday weekend," Powell said.

The ISP warns commuters that U.S. Highway 95 between Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint and Interstate 90 eastbound will be congested for the holiday weekend. Sunday mid-afternoon to late evening will also be a high-traffic period to avoid.

Travelers are reminded to be patient in busy roadways with traffic and other motorists, and to plan an extra hour or two into commutes to ensure a fun-filled, stress-free holiday for all.
