Locals didn't sell recalled product

Contrary to a recent Idaho Department of Health and Welfare report saying two local retailers sold now-recalled frozen organic pomegranate kernels, employees at both stores said the product wasn't sold at either location.

In the case of Pilgrim's Market, owner Joe Hamilton said the product from the Woodstock company was discontinued several years ago. He said Pilgrim's received a notification of the recall on June 26.

"We immediately verified that we do not sell this product," Hamilton said. "We are very conscious of product recalls and take definitive steps to ensure the safety of our customers."

While the product was shipped to a distributor associated with Pilgrim's, the product wasn't sold at the store.

An employee at Super 1 Foods in Coeur d'Alene, the other store named in the recall, said that location received a case of the product in February, but it was returned and never hit the shelves.

Scenic Fruit Company of Gresham, Ore., announced it is voluntarily recalling the kernels shipped from February to March due to the potential for Hepatitis A virus contamination.

No Idaho illnesses linked to the recall have been reported, but there is an ongoing investigation of illnesses associated with a pomegranate kernel-containing frozen berry blend distributed by Townsend Farms that was recalled from Idaho Costco stores recently.
