Collegians clash in playoff at 4th of July golf tournament

WHITEFISH — A pair of collegians who were runners-up here a year ago came through in dramatic fashion this time.
Kramer Hickok of Plano, Texas, used a par on the second playoff hole to beat Tom Swanson of Missoula for the men’s title, while Lindsay Reeve of Missoula needed just a bogey on the third playoff hole to edge Amber Lundskog of Bozeman for the women’s crown in the 77th annual 4th of July golf tournament on Saturday at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
Hickok and Swanson finished the 54-hole event at 10-under, which ties the tournament record set by Jeff Ballard of Billings in 2004.
Hickok, an all-American junior golfer at the University of Texas, and Swanson, a recent Loyola Sacred Heart High School graduate that has signed to play golf at the University of Michigan, both shot 3-under 69s on the final day on the South Course to finish at 204.
Dalan Refioglu of Foster City, Calif., had the low round with a 68. He wound up third with a 209 total.
Hickok, who finished two shots behind the winner last year, needed a 15-foot birdie putt on 17th hole to tie Swanson. Hickok and Swanson both settled for par on 18 to force the playoff.
Hickok and Swanson lipped out birdie putts from 12 and 30 feet, respectively, on the first playoff hole at No. 18 to settle for par.
Swanson turned in a bogey on next playoff hole, which was No. 17. That opened the door for Hickok.
“Twelve feet for a birdie,” Hickok said of what he faced on the second playoff hole.
“I just two putted for the win.
“I was very disappointed with that,” he said of placing second last year.
“So I thought I would come back and redeem myself.”
Hickok was playing in this tournament for a fourth time.
“One of my favorite places,” he said of Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
“Being from Texas, we don’t get to play on this type of grass, in this type of weather. The whole atmosphere keeps me coming back. The people are great ... the tournament was well run.”
Hickok said he won despite not bringing his A game.
“I felt I had my B-minus game,” he said.
“I left a lot of shots out there.”
He still made shots when he had to. Like on the final hole before the playoffs.
“I got out of trouble on 18,” he said.
“I was a foot from out-of-bounds on my drive.”
He used a 9-iron to overshoot the green from 190 yards out, then chipped within a foot and finished with a par.
“That helped me get into the playoff,” he said.
Reeve shot a 3-over 75 on Saturday while Lundskog carded a 77. They finished with 226 totals.
The 75 was the best score of the day.
Defending champ Morgan Lee of Great Falls finished third at 230. She closed with a 78.
Reeve, a senior golfer at the University of Montana, scrambled for the win on the third playoff hole. She drove into the trees, punched her second shot out and reached the green on the par 4 hole in three shots. She two putted for the win.
“A great tournament,” Reeve said.
“I love it. It’s something I look forward to every year.”
Reeve shared the lead after Thursday’s session with a 72. She shot a 79 on Friday to slip back to third place. She was 2 shots off the pace heading into the final day.
“I struggled on the first nine,” she said.
“I birdied the first three holes on the back nine and parred on.”
