Despite going 4-1, Coeur d'Alene doesn't advance to semis - but keeps Spokane Crew from moving on
COEUR d'ALENE - Heading into their final game of pod play Saturday night at the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Wood Bat Classic, the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen knew they had no mathematical chance to advance to today's semifinals in the Senior Division.
Still, the Lums had a chance to spoil the party for another team, and they did just that with a 7-0 victory over the Spokane Crew at Ramsey Park.
Coeur d'Alene's win allowed the Idaho Falls Bandits, who beat the Lums 7-1 earlier Saturday, to advance to the semifinals today in Spokane. Coeur d'Alene and Idaho Falls each went 4-1 in pod play, but the Bandits' win over the Lums was the tiebreaker.
Had the Crew beat the Lums on Saturday night, they would have advanced to the semifinals. Instead, they were eliminated.
Joe Roletto and Jacob Gonzales teamed on a three-hitter for the Lums against the Crew. Michael Hicks went 3 for 4 for Coeur d'Alene, and Gonzales and Brett Robbins each had two hits.
Earlier, Ethan Brandt drove in the Lums' only run against Idaho Falls with a sacrifice fly in the third inning to score Roletto.
Tyson Craig and Johnny Hyland each drove in two runs for Idaho Falls.
Coeur d'Alene returns to action Thursday at the Clackamas (Ore.) Diamond Classic.

Jackson also singled in a run as Prairie scored both its runs in the fifth.
"Kris Jackson pitched very well," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. "He threw a lot of strikes and kept hitters off balance locating his off-speed pitches. We hit the ball hard all game while having great mental approaches at the plate. Very pleased to see how our team responded after yesterday's games."
