THE FRONT ROW with Mark Nelke, July 11, 2013

As a 49ers fan, I read with a chuckle the wire story and the column by our own Jason Elliott in the paper the other day, noting a group of Seattle Seahawks fans want to set a Guinness world record for "loudest crowd roar at a sports stadium."

Seattle? The capital city of Latte-land?

Seattle's Best must be something different than what I thought it was.

That said, having been to a couple Seahawks-San Francisco games at CenturyLink Field, it wouldn't surprise me if these Seattle vocalists set a record for noise when the Seahawks face the 49ers in their home opener Sept. 15. Seahawks fans indeed make a lot of noise, and the roofs covering part of the seats each side of the stadium do an admirable job keeping the noise in.

Remember how loud the Kingdome was during Seahawks games? The Clink is sort of like the Dome - with the sunroof open.

The current world record is 132 decibels - and no, it wasn't set at a Fight for the Fish game or a Prairie Pig game. The most measured noise the Seahawk fans have made so far is 112 decibels.

In any event, no matter how much noise is made in that stadium on that day, you wonder if it will compare with the noise the two teams have been making since last season ended.

FIRST, THE Seahawks traded for wide receiver/return specialist Percy Harvin, known for his migraines as much as the electrifying plays he has made. If he's known more for the latter this fall instead of the former, Seattle will be better for it.

The 49ers answered by acquiring wide receiver Anquan Boldin from Baltimore - the team that just beat them in the Super Bowl. If Boldin can get open - something no other S.F. wideout other than Michael Crabtree could do last year - he will help the passing game, especially with Crabtree expected to miss much of the season with a knee injury. If not, defenses will use even more guys to cover Vernon Davis, who was already getting double-covered.

Next, it was 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh chiding the Seahawks for their numerous PED suspensions. In response, Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman, who played three seasons for Harbaugh at Stanford, essentially said he had "no relationship" with his former coach. Brandon Browner - one of the suspended PEDers - and Golden Tate, the former doughnut thief, both woofed their displeasure.

(Of course, a 49er showed some boneheadedness of his own recently, when linebacker Ahmad Brooks - who jumps offsides a lot - allegedly hit a teammate over the head with a beer bottle and punched him in the face in an argument over car keys last month).

Lastly, there's the two young up-and-coming quarterbacks.

Colin Kaepernick, in his second year, took over during the season after Alex Smith's concussion and led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

The Seahawks paid for free agent Matt Flynn, but Russell Wilson came in and won the job as a rookie, guiding Seattle to the second round of the playoffs.

And Wilson might be the more polished of the two. While Wilson was in Spokane for some reason, presiding over his Russell Wilson Passing Academy, Kaepernick was on the cover of ESPN The Magazine's "body issue," posing in ... well, his body.

Could you imagine Jim Zorn and the great Joe Montana creating this much of a stir?

And who knows what else will come up in the next couple of months.

I'm much more interested in the "noise" the two teams make on the field. Seattle made a statement with its 42-13 beatdown of the 49ers at home on Week 16 last year, but the 49ers won the division for the second straight year, advanced to the NFC title game the first year and to the Super Bowl last year.

In any event, hopefully by the time Sept. 15 rolls around, the actual game will live up to all the offseason noise.
