WALLACE - Jackie Reed, 50, of Osburn, made an initial appearance at the Shoshone County Courthouse Thursday morning on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with a death that occurred more than a year ago.

According to Judge Daniel McGee, Gregory Reed Sr. was murdered in May 2012 and his body was discovered in the trailer home of Jackie Reed on Wednesday morning.

McGee set Jackie Reed's bail at $250,000. The penalties for the first degree murder charge include the death penalty and a life sentencing at the state penitentiary.

Police officers arrived at Reed's trailer home property at 1722 W. Yellowstone Ave. in Osburn around 10:30 a.m., according to witnesses. Reed was placed in police custody sometime Wednesday morning.

An autopsy confirmed that the body recovered from the property is Gregory Reed Sr., who was born in 1955, according to county prosecutor Keisha Oxendine's press release sent out Thursday evening.

Jackie Reed, also known as Jackie Ostoj and Jackie Heidt, walked to the courthouse from the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office just after 8 a.m. Thursday, clad in a striped green jumpsuit and chains.

Reed is being represented by attorney Staci Anderson who was not present inside the second floor courtroom. Anderson participated in the initial hearing over the telephone.

Local attorney Hollis Anderson was present for the state prosecution saying that the state was not seeking to set a bail.

Staci Anderson described Reed as being a lifelong Idaho resident who grew up in Shoshone County. Anderson noted Reed has no income and no means of transportation, reducing her risk of flight.

Hollis Anderson, who described the defendant as a risk to the state and to herself, passed Reed a box of tissues as she was crying at one point during the hearing.

McGee said that he did not envision that Reed would flee if bail was posted. He described the positions of the state versus the defense as "polar extremes."

McGee established Reed's bail at $250,000 on several conditions that include a twice-weekly urine analysis test for drugs and alcohol.

Reed, who was hunched over during much of the hearing, responded in a quiet voice with one-word answers to the judge. She said she is willing to comply with the conditions of her bail.

An exact date for a preliminary hearing is not yet set, but will occur within 14 days if no bail is posted.

John Hatcher, the owner of Leisure Acres where the body was recovered, portrayed the trailer home community as a tight-knit group of people. He said that 95 percent of the residents don't cause problems.

Hatcher said he has records showing that Jackie Reed and Gregory Reed Sr. moved into the trailer at 1722 W. Yellowstone Ave. in September 2010. He added that the only time he remembers interacting with them over the last three years was when he was trying to get them to move their large motor home from the street.

Both Gregory Reed Sr. and Jackie Reed have a criminal history with a range of charges, according to the Idaho State Repository. Jackie Reed has been charged with driving without privileges and battery dating back to 2008. Gregory Reed Sr. had been charged with domestic battery in 2001 and an excessive driving under the influence charge.

Additional autopsy results are pending, and it will be several weeks before an autopsy report is received, Oxendine said in a press release Thursday.

Further details of the investigation, including the means of preserving the body, were unavailable Thursday.
