"Jonas' world is perfect. Everything is under control and safe. There is no war or fear or pain. There are also no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. But when Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training from The Giver-to receive and keep the memories of the community."

That is the synopsis of "The Giver," an award-winning book that will be theatrically read on stage Wednesday at the Bing Crosby Theatre, 901 W. Sprague Ave., Spokane.

Coeur d'Alene resident and Academy and Emmy Award-winning actress Patty Duke will perform the featured role in the presentation.

It is produced by Laura Little Productions.

There will be an afternoon performance at 2 and another performance at 7 p.m., with a question-and-answer period following each show.

Tickets: $15/adults; $12.50/seniors, 65-plus; $10/students under 12
