COEUR d'ALENE - A 19-year-old Boundary County man was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and arson after authorities said hay bales were set on fire in the rural community.
The Boundary County Sheriff's Office received reports at 2 a.m. that bales were on fire near Copeland Road in the northern area of the county. Shortly after that, a witness saw an additional fire start on nearby Krause Road.
The Krause Road blaze eventually destroyed a barn and its contents, including several tons of baled hay and farm equipment. An estimated cost of the damage hasn't been determined.
The witness to the Krause Road fire saw a vehicle leaving the scene. A property owner followed the vehicle as it left, and he was able to provide a description and license plate number for the suspects' vehicle.
He told authorities the vehicle took off at high speeds, but he was able to continue providing information about the vehicle's location and direction of travel.
Law enforcement caught up with the vehicle in a store parking lot, and the driver was identified as 19-year-old Gary Brown.
Brown was arrested and charged with DUI and arson. His two 17-year-old passengers both were charged as being minors under the influence of alcohol, and they were then released to their parents.
Authorities said additional charges may be filed.
