COEUR d'ALENE - A two vehicle accident on Highway 97 sent two people to the hospital with unknown injuries Tuesday morning.
The crash occurred around 10 a.m., south of Driftwood Point near milepost 83, when a Chevy Tahoe being driven by Carol Dorsey turned southbound onto the highway striking a four-door sedan that was heading northbound.
Both vehicles crashed off the winding road and struck some trees at the end of the embankment.
Dorsey was treated and released at the scene.
The two unidentified occupants of the sedan, which landed deeper down the embankment than the Tahoe, were taken to Kootenai Health where they were treated for unknown injuries, Idaho State Police Cpl. Mike Johnson said.
ISP is in charge of the investigation. An accident report wasn't available Tuesday afternoon. Dorsey, who was emotionally shaken after the incident, said she didn't see the sedan before pulling out into traffic.
Mike Bale was vacationing on the property just below the road where the accident ended up. He heard a crash and commotion but by the time he went to see what was happening, off duty medics who happened to be in the area were already at the scene.
"It was controlled," he said of the scene as off-duty medics helped the victims until emergency responders arrived. "Except for the one girl screaming."
At least one female had to be extracted from the sedan.
The scenic, winding Highway 97 connects Coeur d'Alene to Harrison. Popular destinations along the road include Mineral Ridge, Gozzer Ranch and Camp Easton Boy Scouts of America camp. During the summer, some neighbors said, the amount of traffic doubles in the area.
"It's a nasty road and in the summer it gets a lot of traffic," said one neighbor, who didn't want his name in the report. "It's a 35 mile an hour road but people drive it 50 (mph) all the time, especially people who know it."
