Rathdrum Days starts its three-day run today with some new activities sprinkled in.
"We have a variety of events for the whole family," said Tamie Phelps, an organizer for the Rathdrum Area Chamber of Commerce.
The theme is "Reflections of Our Past."
A carnival will make its return to the event. It will be open at Lakeland Rotary/Hico Field from 5-10 tonight, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
"This is the first year we've had a carnival in awhile," Phelps said.
Also new will be a "rock crawl" in which 4-by-4 vehicles traverse through rocky terrain. It will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Lakeland High.
Tonight's activities on Main Street include a car cruise, concessions and a beer garden from 5-10 p.m. and music by Nu Jack City and bounce castles from 6-9 p.m.
Saturday's highlights include a parade on Main Street at 10 a.m. and food, business and craft vendors at Lakeland High from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A pancake breakfast for a $5 donation will be held at the Rathdrum Lions Club on Highway 53 from 7-11 a.m.
The Lions Club's classic car show is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and wiener dog races at noon. Both are at Lakeland Junior High.
Larry Quimby of the Lions Club said about 100 cars are expected for the show. About 30 wiener dogs are expected to race.
"The races will last 40 minutes to an hour," Quimby said. "We always have a big crowd for that. We'll have to keep an eye on them in the heat."
Registration fees from the races will be used toward leader dogs for the blind. Fees from the car show will benefit the Rathdrum Food Bank.
There will also be tours of the historic jail on Second Street from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ice cream and Dutch oven cooking will be available at the jail.
Sunday's other highlights include lawnmower races at Lakeland Rotary/Hico Field at 11 a.m., and music, vendors and kids' activities at Lakeland High from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
