Herbert “Herb” Solum, 80, of Kellogg, passed away July 16, 2013, at Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg.
Herb was born July 30, 1932, in the Providence Hospital in Wallace. He was the son of Herbert C. Solum Sr. and Marguerite Marie (Dalrymple) Solum.
Herb was a lifelong resident of the Silver Valley, having graduated from Wallace High School. He had furthered his education at the University of Idaho and Idaho State University. Herb had also served in the United States Air Force before returning home to the Silver Valley.
Herb was employed as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for Zanetti Brothers for more than 30 years. He always enjoyed driving truck and running heavy equipment.
Herb was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Wallace Elks Club.
Herb loved bowling and golfing and was considered to be quite good at both sports. He also enjoyed fly fishing. While in the Air Force, Herb played basketball on the Air Force traveling basketball team.
Herb married Virginia “Ginny” (Irvin) Solum on July 21, 1979, in Coeur d’Alene. Ginny preceded Herb in death, having passed away on Feb. 9, 2006.
Herb is survived by his siblings, June Gilseth of Coeur d’Alene, Shirley Vaughn of Portland, Ore., and Bill Solum of Coeur d’Alene; and one son, Bryan (Anna) Wright of Helena, Mont. He is also survived by one grandson, Bryan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and sisters, Carol Staley and Dororthy Caron.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at the United Church of Christ (U.C.C.) of Wallace, with Rev. Paul Hegge officiating. A potluck reception of family and friends will be held at the Wallace Elks Club following services.
The family suggest that memorials be made to the Osburn Community Baptist Church, P.O. Box 904, Osburn, ID 83849.
