LA JOLLA, Calif. — Three local golfers had the chance to golf against the best of their age groups at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in Southern California.

Whitefish’s Art Doorn missed the cut after three rounds in the boys’ 15-17 division, finishing 24-over-par at the South Course at Torrey Pines, outside of San Diego. Doorn struggled his first few days, shooting an 80 and 83 on the iconic course, but closed strong. In the third round, he picked up as many pars (12) as he did in the two days combined, finishing with a 77 for the day and a 240 for the tournament.

Kalispell’s Teigan Avery also missed the cut, shooting a 244 after three rounds in the girls’ 15-17 division, finishing 28-over at the North Course at Torrey Pines. Avery was consistent, shooting 82 each of the first two days before limiting her bad holes in the third round to close with an 80.

The cut for both the boys’ and girls’ divisions was set at 9-over-par. Costa Rica’s Jose Mendez won the boys’ 15-17 tournament, finishing at 5-under. Mariel Galdiano of Pearl City, Hawaii, won the girls’ 15-17, finishing at 9-under.

Libby’s Ryggs Johnston finished tied for 117th in the boys’ 13-14 division, played at Morgan Run Club & Resort in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Johnston was 8-over through the first two days of the tournament shooting 76 and 74, but couldn’t find any birdies in his final round, finishing at 18-over 231.

Filipino golfer Kristoffer Arevalo won the division at 9-under.

The three were the only golfers from Montana to take part in the event.
