HELENA — The eventual winner ran away from the field, but the local golfers held their own on a tough final day Saturday at the Montana State Amateur golf tournament at Green Meadows Country Club.

Billings’ Brandon McIver was 5-under-par on the final day, two strokes better than anyone else on the course, pulling away from the field for an 8-shot victory. He finished with a 14-under 270 for the tournament to win his first state am.

Only five golfers finished under par for the tournament. Three-time defending champion Nathan Bailey finished in third place at 4-under. Christoph McConnell finished in second at 6-under.

Kalispell’s Logan Iverson closed his final round with a 1-over 72, hitting birdies on two of his last three holes to finish at 8-under in a tie for 13th. Ryan Porch finished one stroke back in a tie for 15th at 9-under.

Whitefish’s Reed Platke, who opened the day at 6-under, struggled for most of the day, with eight bogeys in his round, including five on the back nine. He closed strong, however, hitting eagle on the par-5 18th to finish a 5-over 76 for the round and 11-over for the tournament in a tie for 18th.

Libby’s Joe Cielak shot a 75 on the final day, finishing in a tie for 27th at 14-over. Kalispell’s Jason Winkler closed on a strong note, scoring a birdie on the 17th to finish 1-under for the day and 17-over for the tournament.

Whitefish’s Tyler Schiff (80) finished at 19 over, Kalispell’s Brittain Walton (80) at 27-over, Kalispell’s Tom Mann (85) at 34-over and Whitefish’s Dave Streeter (83) at 36-over. Whitefish’s Joel Mallams (80) ended at 43-over and Troy’s Ricky Stindt (93) at 73-over.
