POST FALLS - Two of people's best friends - dogs and golf - will be at the center of two fundraisers at The Links Golf Club in Post Falls on Friday.
A dog walk benefitting the Kootenai Humane Society will be held at the course at 10623 N. Chase Road at 7:30 a.m.
"How often do you get to take your dog for a walk on a golf course?" said Gail Hanninen, dog walk organizer who plans to bring her border collie, Indee.
A golf tournament to support the Scleroderma Foundation starts at 10 a.m. Schleroderma is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease primarily of the skin. In some cases, it can be fatal.
Patti Marquis, head pro at The Links, said the foundation was chosen as the recipient of the funds from the event because she's friends with Bobbi Salmon, a pro golfer from North Carolina who was diagnosed with the disease a decade ago.
"She usually comes up here every year, but she won't be able to make it this year," said Marquis, adding that she'd never heard of the disease until Salmon was diagnosed and wants to increase awareness about it.
On-site registration for the 2-mile dog walk starts at 6:30 a.m. The dog walk is a new event associated with fundraising at The Links. There will be no golfing during the dog walk.
The cost is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Dogs must be friendly and on a leash. A trail on the outer portions of the course will be marked for the walk. The KHS will have information at the event.
The cost for the golf tournament is $125 per person, which also includes a barbecue dinner and a chance to win prizes.
