In search of party purity

COEUR d'ALENE - Another resolution will come before the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee tonight that if passed, would create a sub-committee charged with screening candidates to ensure they are true Republicans.
The resolution points out that an important responsibility of the KCRCC is to promote Republican philosophy, but the KCRCC has failed to show any concern regarding whether or not a Republican candidate has promoted or opposed the Republican philosophy.
The drafters of the resolution are asking the committee to establish an ad hoc subcommittee to develop an endorsement event for the 2014 Kootenai County Officer elections, and they want to urge the Republican candidates to abide by the party's endorsements.
Chairman Neil Oliver said that he isn't sure if there are other central committees that handle endorsements in this fashion.
"I didn't do a lot of checking on that," he said. "I really don't want to comment on it other than to say, I am interested in hearing the thought process behind it."
Oliver declined to identify who submitted the resolution, saying it will be revealed at the meeting this evening.
Committeeman Duane Rasmusson, who fought a resolution to censure four legislators for voting against the party platform at the last committee meeting, said he will oppose this effort too.
"I am completely opposed to this," he said Monday. "It is just silliness."
He said the Congressman Ron Paul followers are dominating the party and now they want to start picking the Republican candidates.
"We have Ron Paulers who want to legalize prostitution, and marijuana. They want to decriminalize heroin," he said. "And these are the people who want to determine who the Republican candidates are."
Rasmusson said that makes about as much sense as letting the Democrats take over the party and start promoting abortion.
"These Phil Hart devotees were in the Constitution Party before this," he said. "They call themselves the Liberty Caucus of the Republican Party, but their agenda doesn't match up to the Republican platform."
By adopting the resolution, Rasmusson said the party is just alienating even more legitimate Republicans from the party. He thinks if anything the central committee should be looking for ways to attract a broader base of support.
"Right now, the broader party is all split up," he said.
Former Committee Chair and current committee member Tina Jacobson said she is not going to comment on the resolution either.
"I am not going to tell you anything," she said. "But I think you are going to be surprised at (tonight's) meeting."
Jacobson, who submitted the censure resolution at the last central committee meeting, said that there has been a lot of activity behind the scenes concerning this resolution.
"I think it's going to be a very short meeting," she said. "This may not even come up."
