Prairie falls short in Spokane 14U tourney: A walk-off home run ended the Prairie title hopes in the 14-and-under Spokane Pony tournament in Spokane, after the Cardinals rallied from the losers bracket to forcing a second championship game in the double-elimination bracket.

Prairie (33-14) won two straight in the tournament before meeting the eventual champion Spokane Crew Select and falling 6-5. After a dominating 16-1 victory over Generation Alive Storm in a game that sent the winner to the championship, the Cardinals found themselves in familiar territory with Spokane Crew Select awaiting.

An eight-run sixth inning in the first game helped Prairie run away with an 11-6 win, before Spokane bounced back with a game in which it needed a three-run walkoff homer to defeat a Prairie team 15-14 after Prairie jumped out to an 11-7 lead through four innings.

"In a game where the pitching had run out of gusto, it became a battle of strength with the bats," Prairie coach Brad Calkins said. "And in a game like that, fittingly, it ended with a walk-off home run to settle the championship.

"Every game between the teams came down to the last at-bat."

Trevor and Cameron Luckey each had 11 hits over the course of the tourney. Trevor had three doubles, two triples and a home run on his way to a team-leading 14 RBIs, and Cameron had 11 RBIs with three doubles and a pair of triples.

Other notables were Cody Krull, who went 8 for 14 with four RBIs and two home runs, and Alex Witt, who went 5 for 9 with eight RBIs and two doubles.

Calkins singled out the play of Zach Kaiver, who hit a two-out single to start the big run in the first championship game.

Prairie beat the Spokane Crew Black 14-4 and then the Spokane Cubs 14-4 to start the tournament.

SWIMMING

CAST at Senior Sectionals: Two Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team members, Bryce Kananowicz (17) and Ethan Cordes (16), attended the Western Senior Sectional swim meet in Gresham, Ore., last week. This meet is attended by the fastest swimmers of any age from an area covering the 12 western states.

Preliminaries are swam in the morning and the fastest 32 swimmers in each event return to compete in finals. Both swimmers swam to best times in all events.

Ethan Cordes, who will be a junior at Coeur d'Alene High in the fall, swam into finals in four events; the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, and the 100 and 200 butterfly. In the finals Ethan placed 28th in the 100 free with a time of 53.62, 17th in the 200 fly in a 2:08.41, 9th place in the 100 fly with a time of 56.54, and 19th in the 50 free with a time of 24.34. All four of these times qualify him to attend Junior Nationals in Irvine, Calif., in two weeks where he will be swimming against the fastest swimmers 18 and under from all over the U.S.

"For someone so young, at just 16, to do so well against colligate and Olympic caliber swimmers is remarkable," CAST coach Bob Wood said. "He handled the pressure of finals amazingly well, swimming to best times in the morning and then swimming faster in the evening in every event. It would not surprise me if this young man has Olympic Trials qualifying times in three or four events before he graduates from high school."

Ethan's teammate, Bryce Kananowicz, swimming un-tapered and using this meet as a tuneup for Junior Nationals in two weeks, showed why he is one of the most sought-after swimmers in the nation by colleges. Bryce received calls from 58 colleges the first of July offering him scholarships, Wood said. He swam to best times and finaled in every event he swam. Bryce finished 3rd in the 200 backstroke in 2:04.58, 3rd in the 100 backstroke in 58.03, 8th in the 100 fly with a 56.71, 9th in the 400 IM in 4:35.47, 16th in the 200 fly in 2:09.62, and 17th in the 200 IM with a 2:09.76.

Bryce arrived back in Coeur d'Alene at 3 a.m. Sunday morning, slept three hours then participated the Steve Omi Memorial Open Water Swim in Lake Coeur d'Alene. He won the event by 59 seconds, swimming the mile-plus course in 19 minutes, 3 seconds.

"Bryce's strength and value to college programs is his versatility, he can swim every event and he can do it well. It also helps that his grade point average is 3.95, so he's no slouch academically," Wood said. "His biggest problem right now is finding a college with a great academics and a swimming program that will challenge him, his goal is to make the Olympic Team - and I wouldn't bet against him."

CAST at Montana meet: The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team Crocs attended a championship swim meet in Missoula July 5-7, swimming against teams from all of Idaho, Washington, Montana and Alaska. CAST took nine swimmers to this meet and, led by 13 year old Sarah Nichols on the women's side and Kyle Jones and Kade Hern on the men's side, CAST had many swims in the top eight in finals.

Sarah Nichols, who just turned 13, won the 200-meter breaststroke in a senior sectional qualifying time of 2:52.79, one of the top times in the nation this year for a 13-year-old. She also finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:19.97, and was fifth in the 50 meter freestyle.

Cole Curtis, 13, after dominating the 11-12 year old age group for the last year, moved up to the 13-14 age group and placed 2nd in the 400 IM in 5:32.55, 3rd in the 100 breast with 1:18.14, 3rd in the 200 breast at 2:53.26, 3rd in the 200 IM in 2:34.31, 5th in the 200 free at 2:18.67 and 6th in the 100 fly at 1:08.80.

In the 15-and-up division, Kyle Jones led off with a 2nd place in the 200 backstroke in 2:23.54, 3rd in the 100 free 1:04.20, 3rd in the 200 IM 2:24.49, 4th in the 200 breast in 2:55.40 and 7th in the 100 breast at 1:22.55.

Kade Hern finished 3rd in the 200 free in 2:08.98, 5th in the 100 free at 58.16, 4th in the 200 IM in 2:24.77, 4th in the 200 back in 2:31.94, and 4th in the 400 free at 4:39.09.

Chang He, 13, showed up for one day and swam two events with outstanding results. Chang finished 2nd in the 100 breast with a time of 1:16.35 and swam to a 5th place finish in the 50 free.

Matt Chaistain, 15, had three top-eight finishes in the tough 15-and-up division, finishing as high as fifth in the 200 back in a 3:01.38, 7th in the 200 breast in a 3:09.37 and 8th in the 200 IM 2:49.45.
