Two women were seriously injured when their all-terrain vehicle went over a steep drop and crashed into trees and rocks west of Somers.
The Lakeside Quick Response Unit was dispatched to the scene about a mile up a trail off Boon Road at 7:47 p.m. Wednesday after the women, riding together on the ATV, went over the roughly 130- to 150-foot drop.
According to Ryan Keeler with Lakeside Quick Response Unit, the driver lost control of the ATV as it sped down the approximately 70-degree slope and was unable to stop before shooting across a path and striking trees and rocks.
“I’m not sure how far down that first slope they kept control of the ATV,” Keeler said. “It tumbled, is what it looks like.”
The women, who are believed to be sisters, suffered lots of scrapes, bumps and bruises, and were having difficulty breathing.
Both women were placed on backboards, set up with intravenous lines and transported by pickup truck to ambulances waiting on Boon Road.
“There was nothing life-threatening that we knew about on the scene,” Keeler said.
