Glacier High School has named Cody Fierro as head coach of the boys soccer program. Fierro, a former star at Flathead, joins the program after spending three years as an assistant for the Braves and another few starting the program at Summit Preparatory School.

“I’m super excited,” Fierro said. “Being able to coach at Glacier, a top of the line type of school, it was pretty cool that they wanted me as a coach.”

Fierro helped Flathead to its last state title in soccer in 2001, heading the team his sophomore season as the second-leading scorer in the state. His senior season the Braves finished in second place, going undefeated until the final game.

After attending Whitman College in Spokane on a soccer scholarship, Fierro returned to the game in 2008 as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach for Flathead. He coached the Braves until 2010, and has led the program at Summit Prep since.

Fierro said he is excited to see the kids at Glacier and help grow soccer back to the level it was in the powerhouse days before the split.

“I’m excited just to see where they’re at, as far as level of play,” Fierro said.

“My excitement is to have a team that Kalispell is proud of ... Glacier’s a newer school. They’re still trying to create an identity. They have a really solid administration behind all the coaches. (The goal would be) just to get the community behind the teams, come out and watch the games. Just have fun and support them. Just try to create more support for soccer in general.”

The first soccer practice for the Wolfpack is on Aug. 19, with the season kicking off at home on Sept. 3 against Missoula Sentinel. Fierro doesn’t have to wait long to coach against his alma mater, the first crosstown game of the season comes in the second game, on Sept. 5.
