CORE: Proponents, offer facts, please
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 years, 5 months AGO
I appreciate the Press reporting on the Common Core Symposium Monday at Candlelight, but wish the Press included in its article some actual information presented at the meeting. The presentations were fact-based with sources identified. It would help your readers to know just HOW the information presented was “at odds with” what Tom Luna has said as a proponent of the Core Standards. Personally, I’m not all that interested in hearing that Sen. Goedde thinks it’s a good idea to hear what those opposed to his ideas have to say (even though he failed to attend).
On the other hand, new school board trustee Christa Hazel’s comments, while not informative, were at least revealing. She refused an invitation to attend, saying she thought the presentation would not be “objective” (i.e., she wouldn’t agree). Although she admits meeting with the proponents of Common Core to discuss the new standards “at length,” she apparently has no interest in hearing others’ concerns. Instead, she looks forward to “an objective discussion representing both sides.” I will be waiting for Ms. Hazel’s announcement for that meeting. I’m sure that Mr. Luna and Sen. Goedde would LOVE to attend a public forum at the library with J. Wilson and the Research Mom. The final paragraph of the Press article, quoting Christa Hazel, features more of the same double-speak we’ve come to expect from our (non-partisan) politicians. Thank you, Ms. Hazel, for your objectivity, open-mindedness and bridge-building. . . just like you promised during your non-partisan election campaign.
