Honoring fallen heroes

POST FALLS - Theresa Hart wants people to know and remember her son Nicholas Newby and 88 other Idaho military personnel who died while serving during the War on Terror.
The Run for the Fallen Idaho, which is on Saturday at the Post Falls High track from 9-11 a.m., is designed for that purpose.
Hart said the free memory walk/run is a time to celebrate.
"We don't want it to be sad or depressing," she said. "It's a time to celebrate the lives of these soldiers."
Newby and fellow local soldier Nathan Beyers died two years ago when their convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Iraq.
The biographies and photos of the 89 Idaho military personnel who have died while serving during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be on display on the infield of the track on Saturday.
"I never want Nick to be forgotten," Hart said. "Being Nick's mother defined me. Now I feel his death has defined me. I want to make sure his sacrifices aren't forgotten. That's my calling now."
Attendees can learn about the lost or remember them as they walk or jog around the track for as long as they want during the event.
"We'd like to get as many people from the community out as we can," Hart said. "There will be families coming with strollers."
Event organizers keep track of how many laps are logged and that number is updated on a national level.
The opening ceremony at 9 a.m. will include the Patriot Guard Riders, remarks from Post Falls Mayor Clay Larkin and Lake City High students singing the national anthem. The event will also include presentations from the Kootenai County Veterans Council Honor Guard and the Post Falls Police Honor Guard.
The closing ceremony, with remarks from Hart, will be at 10:45 a.m.
T-shirts will be available for a minimum suggested donation of $5. Proceeds will go toward holding the event next year. Snacks and refreshments will be available. The Run for the Fallen Idaho is a nonprofit, so all donations are tax-deductible.
"We'd simply like to do this year after year," Hart said.
About 40 Gold Star families (those who had a family member killed in action) are registered for the event and will be escorted from City Hall to the track.
The North Idaho version of the Run for the Fallen Idaho was also held in Post Falls last year and Bonners Ferry two years ago. A similar event is also held in southern Idaho each year.
